What is a LED PCB Board?
A printed circuit board made specifically to install LEDs is called an LED PCB board. The non-conductive materials have conductive traces etched in them, joined by PCB vias in layers. Soldering is done on the exposed pads on the PCB component-mounting side. The LED PCB board's electronic parts are either through-hole soldered in the PTH holes or surface-mounted on the PCB pads. In addition to LEDs, an LED printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) could also include wiring harnesses and additional parts like resistors and capacitors.
The thermal conductivity of the LED PCB board should be taken into account when designing the power of an LED light, in addition to the wattage of each LED and the number of parallels and series LEDs. The primary factor influencing LED PCB heat conductivity is the board's substrate material.
Aluminium LED PCB
A particular kind of PCB with an aluminum core made specifically for the lighting sector is called an aluminum LED PCB. The globe is benefiting from hundreds of innovative products created by the rapidly expanding LED lighting industry. But the heat is becoming a problem for this quickly expanding sector. The heat generated by the LEDs shortens the life of circuit boards and LEDs by damaging components.
Heat damage notwithstanding, there's no good enough excuse to ignore LED lighting's advantages and turn a blind eye. As a result, the industry is trying to figure out how to control heat and lower it to a level where the circuit board and LED itself sustain the least amount of damage.
Accelerating the rate of heat dissipation is one method of doing so. Aluminum is the base material used in LED PCBs because it has the highest thermal conductivity, second only to copper. An LED PCB's aluminum base enhances heat dissipation by distributing the heat from the source of heat generation throughout the board. Because aluminum backing keeps heat and PCB cracks at bay, aluminum-backed LED PCBs are the best quality and have the longest lifespan.
Copper LED PCB
High-power LED lighting, such headlights on cars, uses copper printed circuit boards. Although regular copper-base PCBs and aluminum PCBs share the same construction, the former have far higher thermal conductivity.
Additionally, for copper-base LED PCBs, there is thermoelectric separation (also known as direct touch) technology. The copper substrate is directly connected to the LED pad, which solders the LEDs. The copper substrate immediately absorbs the heat produced by the LED P-N joint before it radiates into the surrounding air. Thus, the thermal conductivity of copper-core LED PCBs with thermoelectric separation is around 398 W/mK.
