As a manufacturer of PCBs and PCB assemblies, it's important to inform you about our PCB assembly services. PCB assembly is a complex and lengthy process that involves many different stages, each crucial for achieving the functionality of the final product. Every step must be executed with precision, as even minor mistakes can lead to the failure of the final assembly. To help you understand the entire PCBA process, we explain each step in detail below.
### Before the Assembly Process
1. **Design for Manufacturability (DFM) Inspection**
What is a DFM check? Before the actual assembly process begins, we thoroughly examine the PCB design files to evaluate their functionality and manufacturability. This phase, known as DFM, assesses the design specifications and analyzes any missing, redundant, or potentially problematic features. This stage helps detect design errors, allowing designers to correct any defects early on to ensure successful production.
2. **Electronic Component Inspection**
Before assembly, Kingford conducts a component inspection. Our team of engineers verifies that the component package, value, quantity, and part numbers match the Bill of Materials (BOM) and the PCB board. We collaborate with customers to resolve any discrepancies before starting the assembly process.

### Actual PCB Assembly Process Steps
1. **Solder Paste Printing**
Solder paste printers are designed to apply solder paste (a mixture of small solder particles and flux) onto the appropriate pads on a circuit board using a stencil and squeegee.
2. **Component Placement**
This stage of the PCB assembly process is now fully automated. The pick-and-place of components like surface mount devices, which were once done manually, is now performed by robotic pick-and-place machines. These machines accurately position components in pre-planned locations on the board.
3. **Reflow Soldering**
After placing the solder paste and surface mount components, it is necessary for them to stay in position. The solder paste must cure to adhere the components to the board. The components, along with the solder paste, are passed through a conveyor belt that moves through an industrial-grade reflow oven, where a heater melts the solder in the paste. Following this, the assembly moves on a conveyor belt through a series of cooling heaters that solidify the molten solder.
4. **Inspection**
After the reflow process, the PCB undergoes inspection to ensure its functionality. This stage identifies poor-quality connections, misplaced components, and potential shorts due to movement during reflow. PCB manufacturers employ multiple inspection methods, including visual inspection, automated optical inspection, and X-ray inspection, to verify the integrity of the circuit boards and detect any hidden issues.
5. **Through-Hole Component Insertion**
Certain types of PCBs require the insertion of through-hole components in addition to surface mount devices. This step is dedicated to inserting these components, which pass signals from one side of the board to the other through plated-through holes. Insertion is typically achieved by hand soldering or wave soldering.
6. **Final Inspection and Functional Testing/IC Programming**
After soldering is complete, a final inspection and functionality test of the PCB are conducted. These tests, known as "functional tests," simulate normal operation by passing power and analog signals through the PCB while monitoring its electrical characteristics.
7. **Cleaning and Packaging**
Since soldering leaves flux residue on the PCB, it's essential to clean the components thoroughly before shipping the final board to the customer. PCBs are washed in deionized water, and after cleaning, they are dried with compressed air. The PCB assembly is now ready for customer inspection.
