Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is a widely used manufacturing process in the electronics assembly industry, particularly for mass-producing mobile phones and computers. SMT allows for high assembly density, automatic mass production, and lightweight PCBA assembly. The welded joints and parts are on the same plane as the top plate, and the welding process is reflow welding.
Through-hole technology (THT) is still used in the automotive electronics industry, but it's gradually being replaced by SMT in the consumer electronics industry. THT-produced PCBA electronic components have a larger distance between them, leading to increased circuit board area. The components and solder connections are placed on both sides of the circuit board in THT.
Key of SMT Manufacturing Process
Reflow soldering is a special SMT process that involves setting an inert circulating gas in a reflow soldering machine to provide a hot gas atmosphere. The solder paste scattered on the pad is re-dissolved with cooling air, and only one side of the reflow soldering can be soldered at a time. Double-sided SMD requires a second reflow soldering. The SMT manuscript on the back doesn't fall off since the melting point of the solder paste after curing is higher than the reflow temperature, which helps preserve and reference the design.
Certain requirements that require both SMT and THT cannot avoid the mixed use of reflow soldering and wave soldering. Wave soldering must be done after reflow soldering. The reflow soldering machine fills with hot air, which is first passed through wave soldering before being injected into the reflow soldering machine to apply solder paste again. Most of the electronic components assembled in THT have pins, and their arrangement on the conveyor belt is uniform, which saves time and prevents chaos in the production process.
