The packaging density of multilayer PCB boards is increasing rapidly. As a result, automatic detection is crucial and cost-effective, even for low-density multilayer PCB boards. There are two standard methods for complex multilayer PCB board detection: the needle-bed test method and the dual probe or flying test.

1. Needle-Bed Test Method:

This method uses a spring-loaded probe to connect to each detection point on a multilayer PCB board. The probes are arranged together in "needle beds" and are controlled by detection software. The detector can obtain information on all test points and only probes for the test points that need to be tested are installed. Needle-bed testers are expensive and difficult to maintain. They may be used on both sides of a multilayer PCB board simultaneously, but all points should be made on the welded side of the board.

2. Dual Probe or Flying Test:

This method utilizes two or more probes mounted on a small free-moving magnetic head in the X-Y plane, and the test point is made by CADI Gerber data. The dual probes can move within 4 miles of each other and are based on the measurement of capacitance.

Testing speed is an important criterion for selecting a tester. The needle-bed tester can accurately test thousands of test points at a time, while the flying needle tester can only test two or four test points at a time. The needle-bed tester may take 20-30 seconds for one-sided testing, depending on the complexity of the board, while the flying needle tester may take 1 hour or more to complete the same evaluation.

For bare panel testing, there is a special testing instrument. A more cost-effective method is to use a generic instrument, which is initially more expensive than a dedicated one, but its initial high cost will be offset by a reduction in individual configuration costs.

There are usually three levels of detection: bare panel detection, online detection, and function detection. The universal type of tester can be used to detect a class of style and variety of multilayer PCB boards, as well as for the detection of special applications.
