The measurement of the conformal coating thickness on a printed circuit board (PCB) to ensure internal and international standards are met is now a critical factor in conformal coating process control. There are several methods for measurement of conformal coating thickness and they fall into two categories.

For the successful application of conformal coating on PCBs, the correct thickness is crucial. The thickness determines the effectiveness of protection provided. If the coating is too thin, it will not protect and insulate properly. On the other hand, if it is too thick, it may cause defects like cracks and insufficient curing. The recommended thickness for most coatings is between 1 to 5 mils (25 to 127 microns).

Wet Film Conformal Coating Measurement
The wet film conformal coating thickness method ensures quality control while the coating is still wet.
The wet film gauges are applied to the wet conformal coating and the teeth indicate the thickness of the conformal coating. The dry film thickness can then be calculated from the measurement using solids content as a ratio.

Dry Conformal Coating Thickness Measurement
An alternative method to wet film measurement is using aneddy current system like the Positector 6000. This system is extremely quick and accurate to ±1 um.
Placing the test head on the surface of the conformal coating, the measurement is almost instantaneous and provides an immediate repeatable result for thickness measurement of conformal coating.
