What is Flexible circuit board?

Flexible circuit (also variously referred to around the globe as flex circuits, flexible printed circuit boards, flex print, flexi-circuits, fpc) are members of electronic and interconnection family. They consist of a thin insulating polymer film having conductive circuit patterns affixed thereto and typically supplied with a thin polymer coating to protect the conductor circuits. The FPC technology has been used for interconnecting electronic devices since the 1950s in one form or another.

The printed circuit boards are mostly used in 99% of electronic devices due to its smaller size and features. The PCB is made with different layers starting from single to 64 layers which are used in latest laptops and smartphones. Now, The PCB is even made smaller by the researchers. The Printed Circuit Boards are made flexible. The conventional PCB has a disadvantage that it can be made smaller in any size with any layers but it is not flexible. The Flexible PCB (FPC) allows the circuit to be flexible. The FPC is manufactured by printing the circuits in flexible plastic substrate polyimide.

This FPC are made by photo-lithography method of manufacturing. The flexible PCB allow the electronic products to have circuits in three dimensions. The most widely used electronic products in day to day life such as laptops, Cameras, Smartphones can be made as ultra-thin and flexible using this FPC. The Flexible PCB are not much commercialized but it is manufactured by many vendors.
