New Product Introduction (NPI) or New Product Development (NPD) is a process for creating a plan to take a product from early concept to final, go-to-market form. The process starts with early research and market data related to a particular product idea or need, then moves into proof-of-concept prototyping.

The process of introducing a new product involves several steps that take the product from its initial idea to the market. However, it is not just a simple to-do list. The New Product Introduction (NPI) process is thoroughly managed by a team of experts who monitor the progress and perform frequent assessments at various stages to ensure that the project is heading in the right direction.

The process of introducing a new product ideally begins before it moves out of the design stage. It is recommended to create an NPI plan earlier in the product development timeline to make the process more efficient. However, you can choose to start this process at any point in the product development cycle. For instance, if you employ a contract manufacturer to refine the design for manufacturing and fabricate components, you may decide that the NPI process isn't necessary until after the first batch of products is complete and ready to launch in the market.
